Alex Cummins - Salone Satellite

Melbourne Movement designer Alex Cummins will present the Pyramid chair at Salone Satellite 2012.

Pyramid chair by Alex Cummins.

The idea behind the Pyramid chair was to push a common form but in a different light. The chair is a celebration of the basic geometric form of a pyramid. The chair challenges many of the current trends in commercial furniture through its form; the hard geometric shape of the triangular base pyramid offers a unique shape that wouldn’t normally be associated with a chair. The hard geometric shape is offset with a smooth curved seat cut into the form. The form of the chair is intended to complement the triangular forms that are being used more andmore in modern architecture.

The design process including string, cardboard, foam and wood modeling. The final piece is produced in glass reinforced plastic however the design is not limited to this material. The chair is designed to be a mass manufactured and is chair is suitable for Indoor and Outdoor use. The open pyramid form allows the chair to be stacked and finished in different colours. People can use the chair either sitting to the side or facing forward.
