World Industrial Design Day - June 29th

This Friday June 29th is World Industrial Design Day. Last year we gathered at The Cherry Tree hotel for drinks. This year we will again be in Richmond at the Mountain Goat Brewery, so spread the word and join us to celebrate the profession.

Come join us and celebrate what everyone knows is the most important day in the whole year...World Industrial Design Day!

Although we can’t promise a parade, dancers or keys to the city, we can promise that someone will be wearing black. So take this moment to stop and celebrate a day that is all about you.

ABC Radio National presenter of By Design, Alan Saunders died today. By Design was produced from 2006 until 2011. Alan fell ill while working on his program The Philosopher’s Zone in Sydney yesterday, the network said in a statement. He was taken to hospital but died this morning surrounded by colleagues and friends.

I had the pleasure of meeting Alan for the first time when he was invited by Malte Wagenfeld to be the guest speaker at the 2010 RMIT Industrial Design graduate exhibition - Final Assembly. We met on several other occasions and I respected and enjoyed his work emensely. Alan rest in peace.

Stephen Gray - GM Design

Swinburne University industrial design alumnus Stephen Gray is featured in a recent General Motors video creative profiling careers in the automotive industry. Stephen was a student at Swinburne the year I worked there with Paul Taylor, Lotars Ginters, Mike Englisch, Lyndon Anderson, Stephen Langdon, and Simon Jackson. I recall Stephen's project on speed skates well and also his passion for digital media which was at the time an emerging field for designers.

Stephen graduated from Swinburne in 2002 and began his career in film and animation, moving to GM Holden.  He is now in Detroit with GM and is North American Creative Manager, Design CDI.
