Making Public Sector more Effective
Public sector service providers and designers have the chance to come together to explore the implementation process of co-design with one of Europe’s leaders in the field, Ingrid van der Wacht of PROUD, from the Netherlands. The seminar and workshop will assist service providers and designers looking for innovative ways to improve the efficiency and user outcomes of public sector services for social innovation. Sharing tangible examples from the PROUD project Europe, attendees will be able to share knowledge across practices and the opportunity that can arise from cross pollination between designers and health and well being planners.
The seminar will be followed by a workshop to provide a small group the opportunity to get hands on experience putting the PROUD process into action.

About Proud
PROUD: People, Researchers and Organisations Using Design for innovation and co-creation.
PROUD is a group of organisations from across Europe funded by the European Regional Development Fund exploring co-design as a strategy to get citizens and stakeholders involved in the formulation and solutions to problems.
Proud recognises the special role of co-design in user-centred design and improving public services that is underlined in the Report and Recommendations of the European Design Leadership Board: Design for (smart, sustainable + inclusive) Growth & Prosperity. This report states that ‘Co-design methods can ensure that public services are comprehensible, transparent and accessible. They can also provide the basis for the development of new services focused on real needs.’ During the course of PROUD the partners have worked with the following definition of co-design distilled from this report: ‘Co-Design is
a community centered methodology that designers use to enable people, who will be served by a designed outcome, to participate in designing solutions to their problems’.
Ingrid van der Wacht
Ingrid van der Wacht is a project manager and concept developer who has been involved in the collaborative design of successful social innovation projects in Europe. Van der Wacht is an ambassador for Design for Europe, an organisation that supports design innovation within public and private sectors across Europe. Prior to this, she was the development and project manager for PROUD Europe (People Researchers Organisations Using Design for co creation and innovation). She is also the international projects manager for Dutch Design Week. She works from her own company Factor-i.
With a background in communication sciences, foreign languages and marketing, Ingrid has also worked as a moderator, facilitator and keynote speaker for, among others, the Budapest Design Terminal Province of Brabant, Tilburg University, Cite du Design St Etienne, University of Arts Katowice, Cieszyn Castle and Semana de Design Rio.
In addition to her professional commitments, Ingrid works -on a voluntary basis- for projects involving green and creative economies, aging, social inclusion, education,
fair food, health, participatory policy making as well as concepts of re-use and repair.
Silvana Izzo
Ingrid will be joined by Silvana Izzo following the seminar to explore how Co-design maps with out public health framework. Silvana is a consultant, educator, occupational therapist, somatic experiencing™ trauma practitioner and education and training coordinator, at Victorian Transcultural Mental Health (VTMH)
Silvana has 25 years of experience and practice in a variety of sectors inclusive of health and human services, education and training, community development, philanthropic, social and private enterprises; working in roles that promote social inclusion and the building of community capital.
Guided by ideas of intersectionality and informed by concepts of diversity; Silvana has spent her career supporting projects and initiatives that promote the expression of multiple truths in the formation of individual and collective identity, connectedness, belonging and voice – co creating contexts where people can be both seen and heard so as to meaningfully participate in the shaping of their lives.
Silvana is a health and wellbeing consultant in Victoria offering education and training, supervision, strategic support and both group and individual counselling and trauma renegotiation in conjunction with her public health role in supporting culturally responsive practice, service development and education in mental health across Victoria.
Recently she has lead two co-design projects in her state-wide public health role regarding culturally responsive mental health services and migrant and refugee carer voice in service design and development.

Through case studies and tangible examples this Ingrid van der Wacht will explore:
• The principles of Co-Design- designers and public service providers working together.
• How co-design supports health and wellbeing services to develop inclusive, collaborative and consultative models of care.
• How does co-design make services more effective for the end user.
• What is the end users experience of co-design.
Ingrid will be joined by Silvana Izzo to explore how the principles of co-design map with the public health framework.

Interactive Workshop (limited to 20 places)
Aims
This interactive workshop is for people who are new to co-design - an approach where private or public sector developers and designers collaborate with end users to design new products, services or spaces. The workshop will explore the fundamentals of great co-design with the aim of equipping participants to undertake effective co-design projects. Co-design is like travelling and exploring. This workshop offers a travel guide to let you join the journey PROUD Europe partners, made during their discovery tour. The tools from the PROUD discovery provide tips of how to start up a co-design journey yourself. You will be taken through the PROUD process and will be able to begin setting up your own process. You will certainly gain a deeper understanding of what co-design may mean for you and your environment.
