Adam Cornish - Alessi Trinity Bowl

Kjell Grant was very excited late in 2010 to show me the Trinity bowl by designer Adam Cornish. Kjell's office was next to mine and we met by the printer and as always he was excited about the new work from Melbourne's young design talent. Adam had exhibited with Melbourne Movement in Milan previously and would take the new product to Salone Satellite 2011 in Milan.

Last year at this time Melbourne Movement proudly exhibited the Trinty bowl at Grand Designs Live in Melbourne.

It was great yesterday to get Kjell and Adam together to celebrate the recent launch of the Trinity bowl as an Alessi product in the Fall/Winter catalogue. Adam is very proud of the production product and reports are that so are customers worldwide.

Adam Cornish has been selected to exhibit work as part of Melbourne Now by the NGV.

Kjell Grant is a Hall of Fame member of the Design Institute of Australia.

Tracy Tung - Lumps

Melbourne Movement designer Tracy Tung will exhibit 'Lumps' in Milan this week at Salone Satellite 2013.

Tracy is a final year student in RMIT University Industrial Design and I had the pleasure of teaching her in the first year communications course. I recall Tracy being inspired by the visit in 2010 of legend Syd Mead.

Viviene Chang - Empathik

Melbourne Movement designer Viviene Chang will exhibit 'Empathik' at Salone Satellite 2013 in Milan.

Empathik - Designed by Viviene Chang and exhibited at Salone Satellite 2013 - Milan

Empathik, designed with an inclusive approach, is a mobility aid for seniors which transforms into a flexible shopping trolley. It challenges conventional approaches to walking frames, by integrating subtle feminine visual cues and is a light weight structure with ergonomic forms adaptable to the human body. The flexibility of the design enables users to adapt easily to surrounding environments and situations.

Vivian is an emerging designer based in Melbourne who recently graduated from Industrial design, RMIT. She has a strong passion for inclusive design, which focuses on benefiting the user. She aims to design for those who are disregarded in society or on the edge, by extending her own design knowledge into different disciplines. Vivian constantly seeks to develop a greater sense of empathy and compassion towards others, which enables her designs to be a reflection of her. Her designs seek to innovate and enhance the delight for human life.

Ed Linacre - The Nest

Ed Linacre launches 'The Nest' this week in Milan at Salone Satellite 2013 with Melbourne Movement.

'The Nest' is a pendant lighting fixture that pays homage to the honeycomb architecture of a bee’s nest.

Made from sustainably sourced bamboo veneer, The Nest’s interlocking segments create a lightweight yet robust construction that can be shipped flat packed and easily assembled by the owner.

Beijing Design Week 2012

Beijing Design Week runs from September 28th to October 6th. Unfortunately you cannot be in two places at once so despite being excited whilst in Milan to meet designers from Beijing, and looking forward to it, I am viewing events online from Melbourne. Hopefully next year I can get there from Suzhou with my students from the Southeast University Monash University Joint Graduate School. We may even have a stand or exhibition of work from the first year of the Master of Industrial Design.

Tate Anson - SOYA

Melbourne Movement member and RMIT alumnus industrial designer Tate Anson has entered the Spirit of Youth Awards for 2012.

I would encourage all to support emerging talent and vote in the people's choice for these awards.

Driven by the potential for new technology to reinvent and reinvigorate traditional furniture making Tate is emerging as a design talent and winning this award would greatly support his career.

An amazing twelve month mentorship from Marc Newson is on offer.

Good luck Tate.

Salone Satellite 2012 - Highlights

Salone Satellite 2012 featured a huge number of stands from all over the world. This was my first visit and I did my best to capture some of the stands. Here is a summary of more than 30 of the stands to inspire and encourage your own creative works in furniture.

Salone Satellite 2012 - Jim Hannon-Tan

Melbourne Movement and RMIT University alumnus industrial designer Jim Hannon-Tan made time in a busy Milan Design Week to visit Salone Satellite this year to assist current Melbourne Movement members. Jim spent time individually with members discussing his experience as a Melbourne Movement exhibitor and took great interest in the work on display. Jim has designed products for Alessi and is currently working with the Marcel Wanders studio in Amsterdam. Dusko and Jasna were fortunate to be heading to Amsterdam following the Salone Satellite so Jim generously invited them to visit the studio and the Moooi showroom.

Adam Cornish - Salone Satellite 2012

Adam Cornish is an emerging Australian design talent but a veteran at Salone Satellite and Melbourne Movement so it was a pleasure to have his assistance in Milan and to see his willingness to support this year's designers.

Michele de Lucchi - Milan Design Week

I was fortunate to be invited to attend the Domus Academy Winter School at RMIT in the early 1990s and even more fortunate to have Michele de Lucchi as a tutor. The exhibition Sampete Com'e - You know how it is in Ventura Lambrate featuring his work was a must see whilst trying the impossible, to see all that is on show, during the Design Week in Milan.

King & Miranda - Milan

Perry King and Santiago Miranda founded King & Miranda Design in 1975. I was fortunate this week to meet Perry King at Salone Satellite and to visit the design studio in Milan to conduct an interview for my PhD.

I have particular interest in design practice and asked Perry to reflect on his UK education and how over time his practice was influenced or changed by his work in Milan. The influence of early career work with Ettore Sottsass for Olivetti and in particular the Valentine typewriter project were of great interest to me.

The collaboration between Perry King and Santiago Miranda over more than 37years has yielded a great many award winning projects for clients and is represented in the studio logo of two hands. The strength of this bond was evident in an instant as Perry and Santiago kindly agreed to shake hands for my photograph in the studio foyer.

I recognised immediately the Jill lamp for Flos in the studio meeting room as I prepared for my interview with Perry. During my studies in the early 1980s this lamp featured regularly in international design magazines and showrooms in Melbourne. Designed in 1978 the Jill lamp is a classic from Flos.
