Beijing Design Week 2014 - Monash Univeristy Industrial Design

The MARS - Modular Artificial Reef Structure has been designed to help mitigate the growing effects of modern human activity on our marine environments. Unprecedented population growth is putting increased pressure on our oceans, not only because of climate change and pollution, but also because of destructive fishing practices, increased water runoff and dredging. Our irreplaceable coral reefs are some of the most bio-diverse and uniquely fragile eco-systems on the planet, and consequently suffer the quickest and most drastically from this human expansion.

MARS is a modular artificial reef structure that can be implanted by divers and tailored to suit the geographical layout of the ocean floor. The MARS units have been designed specifically for coral transplanting, which can quickly help re-grow damaged coral reef areas. The structure can also help to increase the biomass of an area with or without existing reef features. Based on over three years of independent research into suitable materials, MARS is designed to maximise the potential for sustaining ocean environments.

Designed in China - Autonomous logistics robot
Monash graduates deliver innovation in China.
Master of Industrial Design student Guo Feng - James designs a working prototype and smart phone app for an autonomous logistics robot. The growth of e-commerce and online purchases in China has led to an explosion in the delivery of small parcels direct to the individual.
The autonomous logistics robot takes delivery at reception from the courier and then navigates internally in a building to your location.

Knog - Industrial Design in China
Professor Xu Jiang was keen to visit the Knog studio in Richmond during his first trip to Melbourne. Knog and Catalyst Design Group directors Hugo Davidson and Malcolm McKechnie have supported studios at the Southeast University-Monash University Joint graduate School (Suzhou).

Outerspace Design Group - Industrial Design in China
Industrial Design in China was the focus of discussions between lecturers from Suzhou and directors of Outerspace Design Group this week. Professor Xu Jiang was visiting Monash University in Melbourne for the first time in his role with the Industrial Design program at the Southeast University-Monash University Joint Graduate School (Suzhou). Medical innovation in China is a focus for the Master of Industrial design program in Suzhou.

CobaltNiche - Industrial Design in China
CobaltNiche directors Steve Martinuzzo and Jack Magree met with lecturers from Southeast University-Monash University Joint Graduate School (Suzhou) this week to discuss industrial design in China. Professor Xu Jiang was visiting Melbourne for the first time and provided insights into the practice of industrial design in China. Transport and medical device design in China was of particular interest to CobaltNiche.

Industrial Design in China - Monash University
The latest digital design laboratory for industrial design in China was on display this week as the Southeast University-Monash University Joint Graduate School (Suzhou) graduated its first students with double masters degrees. The President of Southeast Univerisity Professor Hong Li and the Vice Chancellor and President of Monash University Professor Ed Byrne visited the Digital Design Laboratory of the Master of Industrial Design program at the Southeast University-Monash University Joint Graduate School (Suzhou) during celebrations
Program Director Ian Wong shares the work of master of industrial design student Baoling Yang with Professor Ed Byrne Vice Chancellor of Monash University and Professor Hong Yi President of Southeast University and Ian Pyman Deputy Chancellor Monash University.
The Digital Design Laboratory features 30 Wacom Cintiq 22HD drawing tablets with a dual screen monitor setup for enhanced teaching and learning. Students print computer models direct to 3D printers from the lab.

Tsinghua International Design Management Symposium - Shenzen 2013
The Tsinghua International Design Management Symposium was held in Shenzen China December 1st and 2nd 2013.

ITIDLab - Microsoft Research Asia (MRSA)
Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) announced recently that the ITIDLab has been awarded funding for the project "Intelligent Sustainable Navigation Services (ISUNS): To Enhance Eco-Efficiency for Urban Transportation by Adopting Clouds and Pervasive Computing Technologies"
The research lead by Dr Stephen Jia Wang (Director, ITIDLab, Monash University) and Prof. Ying-Qing Xu (Co-Director, ITIDLab, Tsinghua University) will begin in 2014.
The ITIDLab proposal is one of only nine to have been selected for funding in 2013. Sixty submissions were received in the Asian region from more than thirty colleges and universities.
The International Tangible Interaction Design Lab (ITIDLab) is a partnership between Monash University, Tsinghua University (China) and Tokyo Zokei University (Japan) initiated in 2010. The main focus of this international-scaled collaboration is to explore design-based applications and investigate how new technologies will inform and contribute to design practice, research and education in each country.
