Tape Melbourne - Federation Square

Tape Melbourne is an inspiring installation by Numen currently spanning the West Terrace of Federation Square constructed from 30km of sticky tape. I was fortunate to experience it as I waited to meet Bernie Walsh prior to the Create Design Awards event. I could not help linking this work to the donut selloptape dispenser designed by Catalyst Design Group in 2006. The sellotape donut dispenser was featured in the exhibition STILL09 and was an entry in the 2006 Australian Design Awards. RMIT industrial design alumnus Hugo Davidson is a director of Catalyst. ......That's a lot of donuts!

So good he bottled it - Julian Ditchburn

Cascade is just one of the local beers that is enjoyed the world over. Industrial designer Julian Ditchburn is not a brewer but his mark is on every bottle. The distinctive bottle shape, color, and signature Tasmanian tiger stripes at the base of the neck tell you it's a cascade as you reach unsighted for a cold one in an ice filled bath. A graduate from RMIT University industrial design Julian, now Senior Product Designer for O-I Australia, has designed glass packaging for many other household Australian products. I taught Julian in second year and we caught up recently to discuss industry collaborations with current RMIT students. The Cascade 375ml bottle featured in the exhibition STILL09....Cheers!

Hedge sitting - Oliver Field

The event by Design Droplets to mark World Industrial Design Day at the Wheeler Centre was a great success, attended by a diverse and engaged audience. Raph Goldsworthy has, since graduating from RMIT industrial design, made quite a "splash" on the Victorian design scene with his initiative Design Droplets and he is to be commended for all that went into last nights event. I could not resist the photo opp, in the foyer of the Wheeler Centre was the wonderful "hedge" chair by RMIT alumnus Oliver Field. Recent RMIT industrial design graduates Charles Ng, Lousia Kwan, Edwin Conan and Jackie Wu were happy to oblige with some impromptu hedge sitting.

As cold as ice - Icetrek Sled

In 1998-99 Eric Phillips skied to the South Pole with Jon Muir and Peter Hillary (Son of Sir Edmond Hillary). The expedition of 1425 km and 84 days started from Ross Island and pioneered a new route up the Shackleton Glacier. This expedition was significantly supported by RMIT research and design innovation in the form of the innovative twin wall Icetrek Sled designed by industrial designer Ian Wong and aerospace engineer Lachlan Thompson. Sleds were designed and manufactured for this expedition and purchased by the Australian Antarctic Division where they are used with ATV's. I remember during the extensive testing, dropping a bowling ball on to off tool samples, at -40 degrees, in the Nestle icecream factory in Clayton. The parts shattered into a million pieces - take two - linear low density cross linked material which worked a treat. I will never forget it!

Q Touch - Still on the menu

The Q Touch point of sale terminal for Quest was a major project for the team of designers I had the pleasure to manage for Fred Blochlinger and Mark Johnson at the Outerspace Design Group. The team at the time included Monash University graduates Simon Kooymans, Catherine Joiner, Lai Meng Lau, and Tim Gamble. A concept design by Simon Kooymans was selected from the teams concept stage and this product is still in production and sold globally.
