Ice Barrel - Richard Carlson
The Decor Ice Barrel is a new addition to the collection and is one of over 300 registered designs for RMIT Alumnus industrial designer Richard Carlson. Richard's work on the BYO wine cooler for Decor is his most acknowledged, but it is his enormous body of outstanding work over his career that is his greatest achievement. Richard is a Hall of Fame member of the Design Institute of Australia. The Ice Barrel was awarded an Australian Design Award in 1986.

Hackney Riots - On Einstein's doorstep
The current riots in Hackey are literally on the doorstep of good friend and designer Tony Pletts from Einstein's Octopus. In September I stayed in Hackney with Tony and walked each day up Mare Street. I met Tony in 1986 when he visited John Westwood Design Associates as a travelling backpacker. Tony worked for a time in Spotswood, with Mother's Art productions, one of Melbourne's premier production companies for the advertising and film industry. Described as a polymath Tony has many careers; designer, writer, publisher and father.

Pioneer - Joyce Coffey
Joyce Coffey was a pioneer in industrial design in Victoria. Joyce studied mechanical drafting at Melbourne Technical College (RMIT University) in the late 1930s. Working as a team Joyce and her husband Selwyn developed a huge range of light fittings for Kempthorne designed specifically for the low ceiling modernist homes of the 1950s and 1960s. Selwyn had studied industrial design at Melbourne Tech in the earliest period of the program. Joyce and Selwyn were active members of the Design Institute of Australia.

Keep Cup - Eco Icon
The Keep Cup is an Eco Product Icon designed in Victoria by industrial design consultancy Cobalt Niche. Cobalt Niche directors Steve Martinuzzo and Jack Magree were in my year at RMIT industrial design and Jack and I worked together at the industrial design consultancy John Westwood Design Group.

Knog - Hugo Davidson
Hugo Davidson studied industrial design at RMIT and has been responsible for many iconic and awarded Australian products. Industrial design consultancy Catalyst and bicycle accessory company Knog have been established by Hugo and Malcolm McKechnie in Richmond.

Concept Sketching - Visit by Co Huang Vu
RMIT industrial design students have been fortunate to have alumnus industrial designer Co Huang Vu visit over the past two weeks and sketch in class demonstrating his concept sketching skills. Vu was an outstanding student and he was in the first group of students I taught at RMIT in 1989. His sketches for a highlighter pen are still vivid in my memory and I recall displaying them in the glass cases in the corridor of Building 2 Level 2 for RMIT Open Day that year. Current students are working on tableware concepts and these sketches were done last week in class providing students personal experience of industry concept sketching practice for industrial design. Vu graduated with honours in the first year it was offered at RMIT. (see previous post)

Peter Carr - RMIT visit
Peter Carr returned to RMIT industrial design today and enjoyed sitting in on a CAD class with first year students. Drawing tables like those manufactured by Carr industries are long gone but the principles of good layout, draft angle, and appreciation of 3rd angle projection are still important to this new generation of industrial designers. Peter first taught at RMIT industrial design in 1971 under Gerard Herbst and later with Elivio Bonollo and Des Harris.

Ricotta - Rakumba Lighting
Ricotta is the first of the distinctive lighting products by RMIT industrial design alumnus Simone LeAmon for Rakumba Lighting. Initiating design collaborations in August 2010 Rakumba are committed to developing new product ideas with the best design talent and manufacturing capabilities in Australia. Rakumba director Michael Murray gained appreciation for industrial design through studies at RMIT University.

Simone LeAmon is a leading Australian artist and design practitioner. In 2009 Simone was the recipient of the Cecily and Colin Rigg Contemporary Design Award for design excellence in seating, presented by the National Gallery of Victoria. Widely published, Simone’s designs for lighting, furniture, interiors, jewellery and motorcycle apparel have appeared in global magazines.

I did not expect to combine Australian cultural icons; Barry Humphries, Bazza McKenzie and Brian Davis all in one item in my collection. These Bazza mugs found this weekend were produced by Decor in the seventies and proved me wrong.

Helmut Lueckenhausen
Professor Helmut Luekenhausen's zoomorphic sculptural pieces have always delighted. A graduate from RMIT University studying industrial design during the Bauhaus influenced period of Gerard Herbst, his work is acknowledged in National Collections and has been exhibited internationally.
