ISM Objects - Cinnamon Lee

ISM Objects Black Box currently features the work of Cinnamon Lee and tonight a late opening at the showroom allowed for a closer inspection, some sushi, and a glass of wine.

The Chameleon Series is a range of interactive pendant lamps with solid-state electronics and multichip LEDs which change colour when proximity sensors in the wires are activated.

Marc Pascal - Origins of genius.

It was great this week to catch up with RMIT alumnus industrial designer Marc Pascal in his studio.

Marc will soon relocate his studio and I was keen to explore his archive in particular illustrations and drawings. I was so delighted to see a real blast from the past, an exploded view illustration of a light he designed whilst at RMIT in my second year design class. This design concept was the first of what would become his signature product - lighting. Marc built a fully functioning prototype model. I recall the light was exhibited in the Open Day show and also featured on the RMIT industrial design course brochure.

Dusko Lapcevic - Salone Satellite

Dusko has been working very hard over recent weeks on the development and production of his Iris lighting range in preparation for Salone Satellite 2012.

Salone Satellite 2012 will launch the Iris light fittings by Melbourne Movement industrial designer Dusko Lapcevic.

Iris range of light fittings by Dusko Lapcevic

The Iris Lighting range was inspired by both the sensual form of fishnet stockings and industrially produced expanded mesh. The pattern creation process allows infinitely variable  patterns to be generated, which can make the decorative disks as individual as the human iris.

Manufactured from spun aluminium, polypropylene and Tyvek, the range is available in various sizes, shapes, colours and patterned disks.

The Tribal range was inspired by the sensual form of tribal combs. Like tribal combs, the organic form is created by the clever manipulation of slats of a single profile. Rubber spacers of varying size create the undulating form, while the use of a single slat profile simplifies the manufacturing process.

Planet Lamp - Australian design icon

Always the collector, but this week a burnt orange Australian design classic available in time to be a part of the "ORANGE" exhibition had my name on it. It is in excellent condition, a handy local pickup from a very passionate mid century enthusiast living just a stones throw from the Chancellor and Patrick Iggulden House. The Iggulden House was the home of the John Iggulden, the brother of the Studio K lamp designer Bill Iggulton. Bill lived in Balcombe Park Lane in Beaumaris. The Studio K task lamp featured in the exhibition STILL09.

Studio K task lamp is an Australian design icon designed in 1962 by Bill Iggulden for his company Planet Lighting.

Pioneer - Joyce Coffey

Joyce Coffey was a pioneer in industrial design in Victoria. Joyce studied mechanical drafting at Melbourne Technical College (RMIT University) in the late 1930s. Working as a team Joyce and her husband Selwyn developed a huge range of light fittings for Kempthorne designed specifically for the low ceiling modernist homes of the 1950s and 1960s. Selwyn had studied industrial design at Melbourne Tech in the earliest period of the program. Joyce and Selwyn were active members of the Design Institute of Australia.

Ricotta - Rakumba Lighting

Ricotta is the first of the distinctive lighting products by RMIT industrial design alumnus Simone LeAmon for Rakumba Lighting. Initiating design collaborations in August 2010 Rakumba are committed to developing new product ideas with the best design talent and manufacturing capabilities in Australia. Rakumba director Michael Murray gained appreciation for industrial design through studies at RMIT University.

Simone LeAmon is a leading Australian artist and design practitioner. In 2009 Simone was the recipient of the Cecily and Colin Rigg Contemporary Design Award for design excellence in seating, presented by the National Gallery of Victoria. Widely published, Simone’s designs for lighting, furniture, interiors, jewellery and motorcycle apparel have appeared in global magazines.

ISM - MOMA and Madame Ruby

ISM Objects directors Celina Clark and Simon Christopher studied industrial design together at RMIT University in the mid 1980's and formed the company soon after graduating. The Madame Ruby lamp manufactured from recycled red, orange and white, automotive tail light resin, was selected for the exhibition - Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design, The Museum of Modern Art, New York 1995.

Marc Pascal - Early works

The raw talent and originality in Marc Pascal's design was evident in his earliest work as a student in industrial design at RMIT. I vividly recall in 1990 hanging in the Faculty of Art Gallery, Building 2 Level B, a working prototype of a glass light fitting designed and made by Marc as a second year student. It featured on the course brochure at the time and I will continue the search of my archive for the image. Marc like all RMIT industrial design students of that era completed a brilliant group furniture production project with Hendrikus Berkers, and I was fortunate to run this in Marc's time. The chair he designed with Peter Thomas is shown below. These projects, run in Building 4, were established by Dean Holmes I think, or at least I recall Dean working with my year which was a folding chair.
