This video on youtube from austaliandesign.org was produced in 1967. I spoke to Paul Schremmer about it's production recently and he discussed his work in Melbourne for the Email group on BX Plastic's classic, collectable Capri canisters. BX Plastics factory was on Nepean Highway. These are featured in the video.

RMIT University Mace - Archive images

The commission in 1992 to design the RMIT University Ceremonial Mace was a great honour and I am proud to say it was a wonderful collaboration with staff at RMIT.

Ron Rosenfeldt - Vulcan Conray

Rosenfeldt and Gherardin was one of the first established design consultancies in Melbourne. Ron Rosenfeldt recently inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Design Institute of Australia worked on products for Vulcan including this classic Vulcan Conray heater.

Damian Lucaciu - 4th Year Taxi Concept

Damian Lucaciu was one of my final year students in 2008 which was the first year I was back at RMIT. This youtube video shows Damian's major project. Michael Denham recently recruited by Outerspace Design Group and Johan Kron who has worked for IKEA were also in this studio.

Gerard Herbst - 100th Birthday.

Respected former RMIT Industrial Design lecturer, Gerard Herbst, celebrated his 100th birthday on February 2nd 2011, surrounded by friends, family and former students.

A number of Industrial Design alumni attended the celebrations for Mr Herbst, whose association with RMIT lasted 25 years. RMIT alumni who joined family and friends at the event in Bendigo included Phillip Zmood, Robert Pataki, Richard Carlson, Roger Simpson, Tony Campbell, Douglas Tompkin, Barry Oliver, Oliver Streeton, Geoff Fitzpatrick, Michael Douglas and Ian Wong.

Mr Herbst received a Diploma of Industrial Design/Textile Design and attended teacher training in Cottbus, Germany. Arriving in Melbourne in 1939, he spent the six years of the Second World War serving with the Australian Military Forces. After the war, Mr Herbst joined a Brunswick-based textile business, Prestige Ltd, as Art Director and Designer.

He taught at the Melbourne Technical College School of Art, which became RMIT, from 1951 to 1960. After the College was amalgamated, Mr Herbst spent a further 16 years as Principal Lecturer in the Department of Industrial Design at RMIT before retiring in 1976.

Awarded the L'ordre Du Merite Culturel Warsaw in 1986 and the RMIT Centenary Medallion in 1987, Mr Herbst was inducted into the Design Institute of Australia's Design Hall of Fame in 1999.

Phillip Zmood - RMIT University visit

RMIT University industrial and interior design students were treated to a lecture by RMIT alumni and automotive design legend Phillip Zmood this evening. Always humble Phillip provided insights into design practice and process and to the talents of teams of designers he has had the pleasure to manage as a design director with General Motors. The obvious delight in the early career work and questions like "Why didn't the GTRX become a production car?" showed the audience were well informed. Discussions about gender and interior vs exterior design priorities were canvased. Phillip also joined third and fourth year industrial design students in the wacom lab for Bernie Walsh's extremely popular automotive concept sketching elective.

Safe n Sound - Over one million Victorian babies home safe.

Included in the recent exhibition 175 years of Victorian Design the baby capsule is an Australian design icon. Designed by Robert Pataki and Phillip Slattery.

STILL - Research project call for submissions

I invite practicing Victorian designers and those educated in Victoria to participate in my research project STILL. First exhibited in 2008 this work seeks to document products still in production and those that have endured. Products must be in production and I am seeking in particular the oldest from each designer, but all examples are welcome.

Utepak - Still out and about

The UTEPAK was one of my first products for Silvan Australia, Australia's largest agricultural equipment manufacturer. Designed in 1989 it is still a very successful product and continues to be manufactured after 22 years. Seen recently outside RMIT University being used by a contractor. Note emerging Design Hub building in background at top of Swanston Street.

Edward Kayser - Abba in Australia

The Regis range of glassware designed by Edward (Ted) Kayser are famous for being the first range of wine glasses in the world to be manufactured in one piece. At the peak of the products popularity they are shown here at pop group ABBA's Sydney press conference 1977.

The Regis carafe is still in production today.

Clement Meadmore - Telephone Table

Clement Meadmore was one of the first individuals to study industrial design in Victoria. Early work in furniture branded "Meadmore Originals" is highly collectable and I very was pleased when I was able to add his cord chair and telephone table to my private collection.

NGV Great Hall - French over French

Whilst studying posters at agIdeas 2011 International Design Researchers Lab I discovered to my surprise a fitting coincidence. The National Galley of Victoria's Great Hall stain glass ceiling was the work of artist Leonard French. Leonard happens to be the father of Marc French who I collaborated with on the Brighton Grammar Honour Boards. Our collaboration had been as a result of my tutoring and mentoring Merric French who is Marc and Wandzia's son. Merric is in his third year at Monash University industrial design and it happened that his work was selected to feature on the poster. French over French.
